Exit 1: Formation of Natural Gas and Crude Oil

Exit 1

Are fossil fuels renewable or non-renewable?  Biotic materials decompose to create energy sources:  crude oil and natural gas.  Use two experiments to demonstrate how the earth "cooked" (heat & pressure over time) ancient plant and animal life to form fossils fuels.  Exit 2: Migration and Trapping of Natural Gas and Crude Oil

Exit 2

Is crude oil and natural gas found in large lakes underneath the earth's surface?  Do experiments to show how crude oil and natural gas can be trapped in porous rocks.  Create a graphic organizer to compare and contrast properties of oil and water. CLICK HERE TO ENTER THIS SECTION and to see the main video, classroom video experiments, download curriculum and explore other valuable resources and links.

Exit 3: Exploring for Natural Gas and Crude Oil

Exit 3

How do we find these valuable fossil fuels?  Use contour mapping to look below the earth's surface and "see" rock formations.  Students will create models and calibrate measurements using blank grids. Exit 4: Drilling and Production of Natural Gas and Crude Oil

Exit 4

How do we get it out of the ground?  Create a model to demonstrate how scientific principles affect the flow of fluids to the surface.  Apply knowledge of porosity, trapping and properties of oil and water to make the model work properly. CLICK HERE TO ENTER THIS SECTION and to see the main video, a classroom video experiment, download curriculum and explore other valuable resources and links.

Exit 5: Refining of Natural Gas and Crude Oil

Exit 5

How do we turn crude oil into useful products?  Use the chemistry distilation process to explain how to refine crude oil.  Follow lab safety procedures, collect data and understand the industry applications. CLICK HERE TO ENTER THIS SECTION and to see the main video, a classroom video experiment, download curriculum and explore other valuable resources and links.

Exit 6: Products from Natural Gas and Crude Oil

Exit 6

There are over 6,000 products refined from crude oil.  How can we recycle and reuse petroleum plastic?  Conduct an investigation using the density of a variety of petroleum plastics.  Consider new ideas and technologies for reducing plastic in landfills and reusing this valuable resource.
