Don't Let Fracking's Detractors Ruin
Ohio's Chance....
I've been in the oil and gas industry
for more than 20 years, and I know Ohio
is on the cusp of something great. Just
look at the scores of companies that
have already invested millions of
dollars to explore the state's Utica
Shale. Energy exploration is very
expensive and not something done on a
lark. These companies are here because
they know the Utica is important to
America's energy future.

Ohio has a
150-year history of drilling for oil and
natural gas, but advancements in
technology and extraction methods are
sparking an increase in discovery. We've
been drilling for 150 years in Ohio;
what's different is the technology. It's
changed tremendously, said Rhonda Reda,
executive director of the Ohio Oil and
Gas Energy Education Program. Companies
are looking to tap into potential oil
and natural gas in the Utica and
Marcellus shales, located approximately
6,000 feet underground mostly in New
York and Pennsylvania, Reda said.

pioneered a new gas well in Ohio. In
Belmont County, David Hill has

13,727 feet deep."That makes it the
deepest well ever drilled in Ohio," he

go this deep just a few short years
ago," he said. It's a pioneering effort,
but Hill is equally proud of the way it
was done -- safely."We drilled and were
totally incident free," he said. Hill
and his investor partners expect to
have, by Feb. 1, results of testing to
indicate whether the well, dubbed the
Georgetown Marine No. 1, will be a
productive well."I'm cautiously
optimistic," he said...

NEWSMAKER Q&A State a natural for growth
in oil, natural-gas wells
Q: From
hollowed-out tree trunks to where things
are today, how far has the technology
come -- and where is it going?
A: Right now, we're drilling a
lot of wells. You've heard of Marcellus
and Utica shale's. We've drilled through
those formations for years. But up until
about 10 or 15 years ago, we didn't
actually have the technology to release
the oil that is trapped -- and the gas
that is trapped -- in those shales.
So we've gone from hollowed-out
tree trunks to very, very sophisticated,
complex wells that are able to extract a
natural resource from a rock that we
didn't even think was capable of
producing (oil or natural gas)...
