Energy 101: Workshop Series for 3rd-7th grade teachers

Help your students better understand energy education with these engaging elementary activities.

About this Event

Energy is a major part of everyone’s daily life! Your elementary students can learn and explore this topic with engaging lessons and activities. Help your students better understand how energy is formed and produced through engineering design challenges, inquiry-based lessons, and industry connections.

This 3-session virtual workshop for 3rd-7th grade teachers will be held November 4, 11, and 18 from 4 pm to 6 pm. There is a 50 teacher limit with priority given to rural teachers.

Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN), in collaboration with Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program (OOGEEP) and Ohio Energy Project (OEP), invites you to join the Energy 101 PD workshop series.

Topics covered during the 3 workshop sessions:

  • Formation: How is crude oil and gas formed? Investigate how heat and pressure make changes over time.
  • Migration and Trapping: Can rocks hold water? Learn about porosity and permeability.
  • Seismic: How can you map what you cannot see? How is sound used to identify rocks?
  • Producing and Transporting: Engineering design can solve problems! Build a “pipeline pig.”
  • Refining: How does heat affect properties of liquids?
  • Products: What are the properties of plastics and materials?
  • Consuming energy at home
  • Converting solar into mechanical energy
  • Conducting electricity
  • Thermal energy

* You will be receiving information about required pre-workshop preparation; please watch for an email!

Pre-Series Engagement: Learn more about the natural gas and oil industry and find great resources at OOGEEP and the Ohio Energy Project!

This workshop will help prepare teachers, if desired, to involve their students in the OSLN Design and Entrepreneurship Challenge #STEMpowersOhio.

Participants will receive .8 CEUs and a set of classroom supplies to support these activities upon completion of the requirements and participation in this 3 session series.

Please register by Oct. 23 to ensure time for mailing workshop supplies!
